In 2003, The World Bank had Jeffery E. Cummings put together a literature review on Knowledge Sharing: the ability to transfer information from a source to recipient.  From the breadth of research analyzed, World Bank concluded that in the coming decades one of the strongest determinants of profitability would be an organization's ability to efficiently and effectively transfer knowledge from within its own organization or outside its organization. (Cummings, 2003) Cummings review of literature identified three key components that directly impact an organization's ability to effectively transfer knowledge internally and/or externally. The three variables were complexity, relationship, and activity.

Complexity

Complexity is how embedded an idea is in other ideas. This can also be explained as how dependent the understanding of one idea is upon the understanding of "other" critical idea(s).

Relationship

Relationship being the level of emotional connectedness between the source and recipient and how the level of connectedness could mitigate and/or amplify the complications caused by complexity.

Activity

Activity is the approach taken to facilitate the transfer from source to recipient and how the activity chosen could directly mitigate both complexity as well as superior or deficient relationships between source and recipient.

The literature suggests both the framework a company utilizes to identify the complexity of an idea as well as the framework used to manage that knowledge will ultimately empower or diminish their capacity to transfer that knowledge. Given this, Cummings concluded "a company's capacity to transfer knowledge will become the sole indicator of a company's capacity to generate profit." (Cummings, 2003)

Fast forward a decade and zoom in on "The Great Crew Change" within the Oil & Gas Industry, where nearly half of all professionals will be retiring over the next decade and with them their accumulated practical & technical knowledge. This crew change will provide a huge window of opportunity for the next generation. Unfortunately, this new crew will also bring a significant amount of inexperience which will directly diminish a company's capacity to strategicaly plan and execute. This diminsihed capacity leads to not only increased misalignment, but a large amount of risk as companies adapt to and address inexperienced learning curves. Keeping this in mind, a companies greatest opportunity to address this need is to accelerate the learning curve of inexperienced workers by acclerating critical knowledge transfer. However, as we know conventional and traditional methodologies have historically failed to achieve this.

Innovation is a choice with the right infrastructure.

Developing Critical Thinkers

Alignment Workshop

Developing Critical Thinkers

Competency Acceleration Workshop

  • Specify Competency and/or Issue of Alignment - meet with Executive team and identify critical issue and/or competency for alignment.

  • Design Competency Alignment Workshop w/ Executive Team - with Executive team and/or content expert identify & define critical terms that conceptually shape competency and/or issue and ultimately collaborate on hypothetical schema.

  • Facilitate Alignment Session - DCT facilitates 4 hour workshop for selected particpants where they experience exploration, ownership through building, and collaboration of critical terms and aligned schema.

  • Specify Competency for Acceleration - meet with Executive team and identify critical issue and/or competency for development.

  • Design Competency Acceleration Workshop w/ Executive Team - with Executive team and/or content expert identify & define critical terms that conceptually shape competency and/or issue and ultimately collaborate on hypothetical schema. Using competency, DCT will design workshop materials and breakdown.

  • Facilitate Competency Acceleration Workshop Session - DCT facilitates full day workshop for selected participants in 2 stages. Stage 1, participants experience exploration, ownership through building, and collaboration of critical terms and aligned schema. Stage 2, participants reconcile, revise, and finalize practical & technical observations for schema.

Workshop Short

This is short clip of one of the collaborative projects DCT has completed with international consulting firm Westney Consulting Group. This particular short was a result of some contracted work addressing a large captial project in the Oil & Gas Industry.

Fortunately, DCT has been able to address this need by utilizing their provisional patented methodology to codify the practical and technical knowledge of experts in respective fields and design innovative and engaging workshops that succesfully accelerate the transfer of critical knowldge. This acceleration has in turn succesfully accelerated compentencies leading to a change in participating mindsets and accompanied behaviors, which ultimately has mitigated linked risks that drive cost overruns.

DCT: Developing Critical Thinkers can help your company by designing either an alignent workshop or a full competency acceleration workshop that is capable  of increasing the overall effectiveness and efficiency of your company's ability to assess, access, and augment its hard earned practical and technical knowledge for innovation and ultimately, profitability.

The Research

DCT Professional Services

As businesses, two of the greatest challenges we face are alignment and competency acceleration with both inexperienced and experienced employees. This ever present and growing knowledge gap leads to friction points in both the decision making and executing of projects, which ultimately leads to cost overages and failed budget plans. Developing Critical Thinkers (DCT) has designed workshops that both codify expert understanding as well transfer that expert knowledge in an accelerated manner, all while gaining a particpant wide alignment on the critical concept(s). This unique learning experience has achieved a 4.6 out of 5 user feedback rating from a public traded company and has led to a shift towards transformational thinking.
